“Out of Order” surveys the exploration of meticulous and abstract geometric systems in contemporary Bay Area art. Abstraction is the primary pictorial language of modernism, and its geometric tradition is rarely surveyed locally. What unites the work of these artists is their foregrounding of irregularities in composition or use of structural materials—instead of the symmetry expected from geometry. That subtle shift toward disorder conveys a creative energy and vitality, regardless of scale or media—here including painting, sculpture, rubber bands, computer animation, paper and more.
