It could be argued that few inventions have had as much influence on our culture as the camera. Bay Area painter Edmund Wyss explores this modern tool in a series of exquisitely rendered paintings. As Wyss describes it, "From the perspective of practical image-making, painting has become increasingly difficult to reconcile in the digital age." Wyss is not simply revisiting the question of whether painting has been supplanted by another technique. Rather, he marvels at the universal desire to represent experience and sees the camera as, "a symbol for society's self-image… and the means to memorialize ourselves."
SFMOMA Artists Gallery offers a diverse selection of original artwork by Bay Area Artists. Rental and purchase of the artwork supports the Gallery’s year-round exhibition program.
