Mentors nurture the youth’s creative ideas by offering support and guidance, helping to set and meet goals, and sharing skills, knowledge, and expertise through this year long program. The highly selective program seeks passionate and curious visual arts students in need of guidance, and pairs them with a professional artist in their field of interest. This program is designed and driven around the student artist’s interests and needs, as youth have studied painting, graphic novel production, photography, sculpture and spatial arts. Through these mediums mentors and mentees work together to share ideas, engage in research, and take their art practice to the next level.

This semester, pairs worked to develop a youth-driven group exhibition exploring the theme of growth, examining what artistic development looks like over a period of time. Seeking to explore the polymorphous nature of the figure, Ballet of Heads puts into dialogue the Baroque canvases of Peter Paul Rubens, the American Regionalism of Thomas Hart Benton, the colorful near abstractions of Asger Jorn and Hans Hofmann, the sharp angles and loose contours of George Grosz and Max Beckmann, the tormented personages of Francis Bacon, and the humorous critique found in the drawings of Raymond Pettibon.

The exhibition takes as its point of departure the work of Nicole Eisenman, on view in MATRIX 248, teasing out many of the threads found in her paintings and works on paper—a blending of seemingly oppositional categories such as social realism, abstraction, folk art, and popular comics—and contextualizing it in the process. All three are accomplished portrait painters in their own right and we are thrilled to see them join forces in a personal celebration of the fundamental pastimes enjoyed when being one with nature.

Please join us on Friday, May 17th 7 to 9pm for the artist reception and a special live musical performance by the artists’ band, “Del Toro”.
Sat, 13 Apr 2013 20:44:22 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/sf/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/sf/Events/list Kori Newkirk - Jessica Silverman Gallery - May 17th, 2013 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Jessica Silverman Gallery is pleased to present a subtle, forceful exhibition of new sculptures and photographs by Kori Newkirk. Finding inspiration in his surrounding environment and the arrangement of objects such as hats, candles, ships, and things either found or invented, Roßner's mysterious and melancholic imagery deals with the tension between figuration and its process of alienation.

Starting with a basic idea, Roßner repeatedly alters an image in a meticulous process of visual discovery, working until he considers it completely finished. Traces of the developmental process – such as overpainting, the insertion of drawings and the smearing of colors – remain deliberately conspicuous, conveying the production process to the viewer. These traces are essential to the work's impact. The process is slow and the paintings reveal their full effect when approached at the same speed, slowly. "My effort is using the means of painting in such a way that I can create an atmosphere of concentrated tranquility, otherworldliness and melancholia."

CHRISTOPH ROßNER was born in Zwickau Germany and currently lives and works in Dresden.
