Having grown up within the San Francisco Bay Area street art scene in the late 1990’s, Lexis’ initially only practiced in this style before moving into his current approach of making his art forms. Employed more than a decade at several art specialty shops, he progressed his color techniques with acrylic paints and inks and honed his daringly unique style further. Despite senior criticism from intensely conservative areas, he continued producing according to his ‘new world’ vision and focused on his future demographic. This would later yield greater success in the long run for him. The style that he calls “subconscious imagery,” works off the idea to make entirely new shapes, which often end up containing appearances of untraceable memories.

Having studied the street of its graffiti and having completed various fine art classes at the San Francisco Academy of Art, his skill as a visual artist has sharpened but for the most part his own techniques are kept secret. Lexis has exhibited his work in various galleries and venues in San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, and Berlin.
Sat, 22 Feb 2014 15:25:03 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/sf/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/sf/Events/list Megan Diddie - Anno Domini - November 1st, 2013 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM
Breathing up from the ocean
To touch the tree covered mountains
To rain on the forest floors
The Fog blanketed our vision…

Now see a car, a pelican flapping by the windshield
Now see the bramble wrap around the leg
Now a thousand legs pounding out paths
Now the forms recoil, the surf slaps the rock

Phrases meshing images of plants
into half useful shapes:
A basket walled on three sides,
A shawl fraying violently at the end, becoming two
In air, Bougainvillea vines behind
A curtain of chimes, pushed by wind
Clanging against their wills

Images held, Images remembered
Now see Flowers in the phone
Winding through the Fog hung coastal range
Now trammelling ahead in Flatness
At rest.

~poem by Tim Hogan

Megan Diddie returns to Anno Domini for her second solo exhibition featuring a new series of works. The exhibition will be on view at Needles & Pens through November 15th and features the work of Andrea Bacigalupo , Andrew Chapman, Clayton Colvin, Lee Hunter & Pachi Giustinian, and Erik Swanson.

Formalism reaches far into the depths of history and art history alike. In painting the qualities are identified as line, value, color, and texture. These elements are compositional ones that the artist may use as a tool to complete a work that is balanced and aesthetically readable. These compositional qualities separate content and technique from the work and are applied to other art practices such as drawing and sculpture. The pedagogy of formalism, however, is long ingrained into an artist’s training. These artists based throughout the country in Oakland, New York, Austin, and Birmingham both resist its foundation and utilize its characteristics.

True Formalism is rarely explored in contemporary art to the degree it once was. This exhibition looks to the artists who sit on the edge of a practice surrounding formalist ideas and tendencies. The notions of formalism are taught both classically and contemporaneously and often artists forgo or rebel the theory as it relates to art. This group of artists is reacting to the rules of this model, but is doing so in a way that challenges the end product. Andrea Bacigalupo has embraced the literal form. Using concrete she captures a complicated and intricate surface relying heavily on chance and the knowledge that the outcome will reference certain aspects of landscape composition. Andrew Chapman and Erik Swanson deconstruct the practice of painting in order to allow for a more holistic approach to the medium. Their treatment of the plane harbors enormous depth and control of the abstract visual. Clayton Colvin employs formalist ideologies to control the spatial plane presenting the viewer with a specific experience of the image. Through careful study of process and material Lee hunter’s work is based in the roots of formalist design creating sustained small sculptures that speak both to their construction and their visual image. In collaboration, Pachi Giustinian painted the interchangeable pieces allowing the objects to reach autonomy among themselves.

Needles & Pens is an emporium of zines, books, handmade goods, and an art gallery. Ogawa Plaza. Attached to the windows lining one half of the gallery space, tactile transducers resonate the glass with sounds recorded from around the Plaza, defying the structural barrier dividing outside and inside space. Cutting through the center of the gallery is a transparent wall that acts as both a sonic barrier, splitting the visual experience from the audible and creating a second space to house an acoustical sculpture of felt and aluminum.

About the Artist: Jacqueline Kiyomi Gordon creates objects and installations that alter physical experience with the goal of creating new concepts in acoustical understanding. The bi-city artist - splitting her time between the Bay Area and Los Angeles - received her MFA from Stanford University. She has recently shown at di Rosa, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Berkeley Art Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and Cue Arts Foundation in New York. 2 x 2 Solos is Gordon's first solo exhibition in the East Bay.

About the Curator: As a curator Amy Cancelmo is interested in presenting work that addresses current social issues and creates opportunities for dialogue, learning and critical engagement by all participants. A recent graduate from San Francisco State University, she has a Master of Arts in Queer Art History. Cancelmo's recent project Strange Bedfellows is a nationally traveling exhibition and catalogue exploring collaborative practice in queer art making. Fleming’s mulit-colored powder-coated steel sculptures are investigations of the metaphysics of geometric forms. Through the application of color to organic forms inspired by nature, Fleming’s sculptures play with spatial form and movement. The use of color, light, and shadows allow the geometric forms to expose and define the architecture of the work.

On display will be Crackle, a large-scale powdered-coated steel sculpture which measures 102 x 174 x 144 inches. The scale of the work enables the viewer to enter the sculpture directly experiencing it as a 3 dimensional environmental work. Also on view is Planetesimal, a freestanding work that physically cannot be entered, but allows the viewer to visually explore the many openings allowing for exploration of overlapping surfaces and geometry.

Continuing with her execution of color and shadows, Fleming’s polychrome wall sculptures are fabricated by using layered panels that are precisely spaced apart allowing the colors and shapes to project and embody the surrounding space. Fleming invites the viewer into her thought process with a display of a small selection of gouache studies displaying the intricate color combinations while depicting the sensations conjured by the process.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Linda Fleming received her education at Carnegie Mellon University and is currently the Chair of the Sculpture Department at the California College of the Arts. In 2007, she had a mid-career retrospective, titled Refugium, at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is represented in major public and private collections, including the Oakland Museum of California, Berkeley Art Museum, Albuquerque Art Museum, Djerassi Foundation, Woodside, CA, Cantor Art Center at Stanford University, Runnymede Sculpture Farm, Woodside, CA, and Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis, MO, among others. Evanescent: Sculpture, Wall Sculpture and Drawings will be on view through December 21, 2013
Sat, 26 Oct 2013 19:01:27 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/sf/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/sf/Events/list Stacey Steers - Catharine Clark Gallery - November 2nd, 2013 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Stacey Steers' first solo exhibition at Catharine Clark Gallery, Night Hunter, will be a multi-media display of work, consisting of screenings of her films Night Hunter (2011) and Phantom Canyon (2006); framed collages from the production process of the films, dollhouses embedded with video screens, shadow boxes, and art books of Steers' animations.

Night Hunter, Steers most well-know film, and namesake of the exhibition, will be paired with two dollhouses which act as installation sculptures for her film. Through its windows viewers witness disquieting dreamscapes, combining images of Lillian Gish from silent era films, with fragments of 18th and 19th century illustrations. Steer's film Phantom Canyon (2007) will be screened in the gallery's dedicated media room. Collages from the production process of Steers films, stand-alone pieces of art in their own right, will be on display. Steers' work is ripe with transmogrifications, weaving together in dream-like narratives, in which wonder, horror and beauty coalesce.

Stacey Steers films are composed of thousands of individual, handmade works on paper. Her animations have screened at the Sundance Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, New Directors New Films in NYC and the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., winning national and international awards. Recently she has begun expanding her work to include installations that reflect on and bring focus to the films by placing production elements and/or film loops in a new context. Her work has been installed at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Denver Art Museum, and the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Germany among others. The exhibition will feature about twenty artists some of them with fine exhibition records and others less established. All artists at the studios were chosen by juried process to be admitted to residency.

Meridian has offered all three floors for this exhibition, as so many artists will be represented. This is a large project and will ultimately bring together intensely diverse approaches on how best to speak the visual language and how best to express the area of either investigation or concern.

The artists all know each other, support each other, and yet bring in their own voice. This will manifest particularly by the many multi-dimensional works on view - the object is of high interest.

The Cubberley Studios are supported by the city of Palo Alto; the artists are required to pay an appropriate rent.
