The neighborhood of Pilsen offers a bevy of eclectic art galleries, authentic Mexican cuisine, and local bakeries. While spending the afternoon here, be sure to head to the corner of Bishop and 18th Street where you will find the newest darling of Chicago's vintage clothing scene: Knee Deep Vintage. After a year of cross-country adventures in collecting, co-owners Trent Marinelli and Carlos Lourenco opened the secondhand storefront in March 2008. Knee Deep specializes in mid-to late 20th century vintage apparel, shoes, accessories, barware, furniture, vampy lamps and chandeliers. The shop is a celebration of funky kitsch and found treasures. Marinelli and Lourenco have created a store for the 21st century. The business model is truly green; the friendly proprietors rescue forgotten items and bring them back to life. They buy, sell, and trade inventory, sometimes offering cash or store credit. With this tough economy, Knee Deep is a savior for the vintage junkie (prices range from $10-$24). They are also connectors to the community. Knee Deep's website,
www.kneedeepvintage.com, offers links to fellow retailers, friends, and places they love. Marinelli and Lourenco do their best to help foster the local art scene by carrying book journals and handmade jewelry from artists in the area. The chic shop also holds Friday night celebrations that feature extreme discounts, live music, and wine. With these amenities Knee Deep is sure to entice any trendy Chicagoan to Pilsen.
Aside from their highly stylized eye for vintage finds and their connection to the community, Knee Deep provides clothing for every size and flavor. There is no need to dig or sift through piles of worn or overused items. The attentive staff chooses inventory in pristine condition and everything is arranged by color and garment. Don't miss the accessory counters by the register. The display is chock full of fabulous belts, unique earrings, and hip sunglasses in a rainbow of colors. Any fashionista will find it easy to navigate. With rack after rack of beautifully organized clothing and reasonable pricing, this gem of Pilsen is a thrifty shopper's oasis and a style maven's dream.
