What is the ArtSlant Prize?

The ArtSlant Prize is a year-long juried competition culminating in the ArtSlant Prize Exhibition at one of the major fairs in Miami Beach during Art Basel. This year's competition will take place over 6 rounds and be juried by world-renowned gallerists, arts professionals and educators. The ArtSlant Prize is awarded to an emerging artist whose work helps advance contemporary aesthetic, conceptual, and political discourses.  

 

The ArtSlant Prize includes:

  • $5000 in Cash AwardsFair Exhibition in Miami Beach during Art Basel
    • 1st Place - $3000
    • 2nd Place - $1000
    • 3rd Place - $500
    • Student Prize - $500
  • $15,000 in stipends and exhibition fees
  • Featured in the ArtSlant Prize Catalogue
  • $5000 purchase award and inclusion in the ArtSlant Collection

 

Student Prize:

This year, we are also proud to initiate a Student Track in the ArtSlant Prize. When applying, just select student in the Categories section if you are currently enrolled in a BFA or MFA program. The Student Track will afford special consideration to artists just beginning their career and, if selected, will include consultations with our editorial team.

 

 

 ArtSlant Prize Exhibition June/July: Bryan Volta

 

Bryan Volta's exhibition, Mythology of Masculinity, runs Thursday, June 19th - July 19th at the corner of State and Adams in the Chicago Loop. 

 

Mythology of Masculinity:

The repetition of abuse during physical training inspired the photographs and objects from Mythology of Masculinity; they are visual and physical manifestations of the changes induced by aggression. The intent of this project was to convey that aggression and strain placed on a particular object by manipulating its physical appearance and allowing its aesthetics to conform to the abuse it endures. The sculptures compress the phenomenon of training, apparatus, and boxer into one entity. The photographs attempt to capture specific elements that convey the brutality associated with physical improvement, specifically for an improved appearance of power.

Joanna Szupinska-Myers
Curator of Exhibitions at the California Museum of Photography

Joanna Szupinska-Myers is currently the Curator of Exhibitions at the California Museum of Photography, part of UCR ARTSblock in Riverside. In 2011-12, she was Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. She earned her MA in Curatorial Practice in 2010 at the California College of the Arts, San Francisco, and her BA in Art in 2004 at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Sebastian Campos
Principal, THE MISSION, Chicago | Houston

Sebastian Campos is a second generation collector- his family has been acquiring important Latin American artworks for the last thirty years, during several of which Sebastian was managing the collection. His father’s influence, as well as his time at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, led Sebastian to begin collecting contemporary art, first with pop art prints and later shifting his focus to artists of his own generation.  In 2010, he opened THE MISSION, a contemporary art gallery in Chicago and expanded to a second location in Houston in the fall of 2013. In many ways the opening of THE MISSION was a natural progression of both his family history and personal experiences.


Anca Rujoiu
Curator, CCA - Centre for Contemporary Art, Singapore

Anca Rujoiu is a Romanian curator currently based in Singapore. She is a curator at CCA - Centre for Contemporary Art, Singapore and co-director of FormContent, a curatorial initiative in London. Previously, she coordinated the public programme of the School of Fine Art at the Royal College of Art (UK). With FormContent she explored various exhibition models and challenged the relationship between artist/curator often overlapping their roles in the process. Her recent project with FormContent, It’s Moving from I to It unfolded as a performative script within a nomadic structure testing formats of production and distribution.

She has been a visiting lecturer at various universities including Goldsmiths College, Central Saint Martins University and Newcastle University (UK). As a researcher and writer, she worked for several film and television productions, artists’ publications. She graduated from the MFA Curating Programme at Goldsmiths College (UK) and was one of the curators selected for the 3rd International Curator Course at the Gwangju Bienniale (KR) in 2011.
