Egg Tempera Icon Retreat with Mary Jane Miller

This past October egg tempera workshop was a delight, so many memories and images are etched in my mind. Special experiences stay with us like water in the well; we go back to them for refreshment and joy. The icon painter spends a great deal of time alone and now you know for good reasons. It takes time, patience and prayer to bring about any image with egg tempera. In reality we do nothing alone, the icon needs a painter as well as a viewer.

Julie, one of the participants, captured a unique perspective for icon painting with her photos. The angle of perspective changes all the time, exactly like the angles we placed the icon to get a comfortable position to lay on the paint. It was so wonderful to look up in that huge room and see you all busy working, on the same image with an individual mind.

The idea of painting one image together as a gift for the Marywood Retreat Center was brilliant. Although one or two students did not get a chance to contribute, I promise the next time no one will be overlooked or forgotten. It was a first experiment to see if one icon can be painted by 18 people! Next time we start earlier. We acted as a unit, one body, many parts; it reminds me of how open and willing the work allows us to be.
