A voicemail left on my phone over the holiday season...

Hi Daniel, this is your mother. M-O-T-H-E-R. I feel like hell, I have for a whole week. I’ve had headaches, I’ve had bladder infections, every time I go peepee it’s like peeing fire.  I’m just so tired of it. We weren’t invited out this year, so Dad went out to get the fixins to make Christmas dinner. He said we’d have turkey, and stuffing and casseroles and stuff that we’ve had in the past, and he’s gonna be working hard on it, but I just don’t have anymore...anymore energy.

Remember when I used to cook a big dinner every Christmas Eve for the whole family and friends? I never did count how many were there but I bet there was forty or more. It worked out nice. One of the nurses at the hospital, she was a good friend of mine, and I think she’s died now, I can’t find her anyplace. Last time I talked to her in California she lived in Baldwin Park. Her and I worked together on different units in the hospital. We exchanged birthday cards every year–I mean Christmas cards–and presents. And so I have a bunch of the appropriate things, and pins, and I gave her one, too. When she gave me one... it was kind of a nice thing.

I’ve met these real nice couple of families across the street. The one of them, her name is M–Mar...Marta. It’s Martha in English, but in Mexican it’s Marta. Her husband’s name is Josef, and he’s a big shot teacher. He teaches people that are Mexican to learn English, and the ones that are English to learn Mexican. His wife just called and said that he’s gonna be on vacation this week so he’ll be home for Christmas, and I think that’s really nice. The other couple, they have two children. They have three children. Alex... I can’t remember the girl’s name. Alexia. The baby is named David, and that little baby, he just loves Dad and I. It’s so good when he comes to see us. I’m scared to death when he tries to cross the street, but I guess he’ll learn some way. But I don’t like to boss him, I just like to love him. Pick him up and hug him and...

So what’d you get me for Christmas? I don’t have anything from you yet. What did I give you, do you remember? A whole lot of frozen food. I did get a gift from Cheyenne, and she told me I could open it if I wanted to, but you know I don’t want to do that. I like to open them on Christmas morning. Kathy has sent a couple of gifts for us. Julia sent a huge basket, like a bell basket, and it’s full of everything. She called some place in Texas and she ordered it and it came right here. Gave her charge card from Australia. So it worked out real good. It’s here, and I haven’t–
