Press Release:
Join us Friday, May 14th at Black Dot Cafe Gallery for the opening reception of The Color Is RED, a juried show of diverse Bay Area artists whose small works explore the dynamism, power, and mysticism this color contributes to our everyday lives.
Considered a power color, Red is the color of passion, blood, and is often an element in ceremonial clothing for rituals in many cultures around the world. In books we’ve heard characters described as ‘seeing red’ to punctuate an angry, livid moment. But, of course, when on a rose—red symbolizes love. Women wear red dresses to stand out in a crowd, and a red light district is a beacon for ladies interested in selling more than a wink and a smile. In certain Southern quilts, red evokes magic, but it’s also the costume color of ole’ saint nick and the religious imagery of the devil. And what color were Dorothy’s shoes that brought her home? Red is also the color of politics. How can one color mean so many different things?
The Color Is RED offers a glimpse into the language of color—it’s secrets, symbols, and statements, through the eyes of Duane Deterville, Lorrie Fink, Githinji Wa Mbire, Carla Herzenberg, Letitia Ntofon, Dolores Vitero Presley, Marcel Diallo, Karen Seneferu, Nancy Holliday, Malik Seneferu, and Eesuu Orundide. See you there!
