Highlights of May open galleries
On May 1st ArtSlant founder Georgia Fee was in town, so she and SF City Editor Natalie Stanchfield hopped around the galleries downtown. Here are some of our favorites: At Gallery Paule Anglim, the impressive wooden sculptures of John Buck: His earlier large-scale woodblock prints were the most fascinating, but a photograph wouldn't do them justice.. At Fraenkel Gallery a new show by Christian Marclay, a DJ and artist, has the feel of a curated group themed show, as he uses an astounding variety of media to visually explore music and sound: Above are two LPs cut to represent a yin yang symbol, rendering both records unplayable, glass drumsticks which would shatter if used, and turntable slipmats with holes through the hands like the stigmata. At Don Soker Contemporary Art works by Victoria Wagner explore an inner geography that represent our place in the world as merely a layer of sediment in geological time: At Scott Nichols Gallery the photographs by Barbara Morgan feature some famous images of Martha Graham, modern dancer and choreographer, at her height in the 1940's: At Steven Wolf Fine Arts the abstract work of Daniel Tierney is endlessly fascinating with its impossible planes and staggering color: At Patricia Sweetow Gallery a seamless blending of work by Sarah Wagner and Gale Antokal explore the fragility of our natural world. Especially fascinating are the delicate fabric sculptures by Sarah Wagner: The sculptures are a perfect counterpoint to Gale Antokal's work representing our fleeting environmental stability:
