West Coast Art Assemblage Show, May 1-31 Ukiah, CA As the art form of assemblage continues to captivate viewers and allure perspective designers, the discussion of art and meaning is alive and well under this seemingly random collection of parts and objects. During the month of May, seven influential artists, both established and newly discovered, will be represented at Ukiah’s innovative and alluring Beat Gallery on Perkins Street. This collection of recent works by Chris Bales,... [more]

(Image: Edmund Wyss, Speed Graphic, Oil on Board, 2008; © Edmund Wyss) Edmund Wyss (b. 1970, Portland, OR) My unusual approach to still life oil painting focuses on detailed rendering of mechanical forms. I draw comparisons between rudimentary weapons and old photographic tools with an emphasis on segmented components and numeric impressions. My rigid compositions are based on a grid which reflects the geometric structure of these forms. Devoid of narrative traces or subjectivity, I emphasize thei... [more]

30 Master Class in painting, but Surreal?
by
Todd Schorr at San Jose Museum of Art June 20th, 2009 - September 16th, 2009
Posted 8/14/09

The Todd Schorr show at the San Jose Museum of Art is an assault. The artist grabs you and wrings you out, then you stagger away, dazed. Mr. Schorr is important, a fact nicely recognized by the SJMA in this very large solo show, which gathers paintings from a myriad of collections, such as that of Leonardo DeCaprio. This retrospective features works as far back as the mid-80s, I seem to recall, with a brief stop in the early 1990s with some mid-size pieces, before dashing forward at breakneck spe... [more]

Kurdish_exhibit An intimate look at an ancient culture in modern times
by
Jon Vidar at Badè Museum May 14th, 2009 - December 17th, 2009
Posted 5/18/09

Unless you’re an aficionado of middle-eastern culture or world politics, you have probably heard little about the Kurds, a historically nomadic ethnic group that inhabits the mountains that edge Turkey, Syria Iraq and Iran. Photographer Jon Vidar’s first public exhibition offers an intimate look at this culture that has thrived since the Mesopotamian era but has garnered little consideration in modern times. Vidar’s short series of photographs, which focuses on Kurds in both southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq,... [more]

Dana-harel_eagle_lg Preview: An Arteaser Introduction to Dana Harel
by
Dana Harel at Gallery Wendi Norris April 2nd, 2009 - May 3rd, 2009
Posted 3/17/09

Born in Tel Aviv, Dana Harel observed her father and grandparents paint in their leisure time. Pursuing art only as a hobby, her family members had developed meticulous technique, but did not attempt new content, which shaped her early experiences with art: "I took some art classes, but I was never pushed to think for myself. It was kind of about learning techniques or painting or looking at other art or landscapes and painting what you see" The practically-minded Harel studied architecture at... [more]
