Cheryl Calleri, Thekla Hammond at Vessel Gallery October 2nd, 2013 - October 26th, 2013

http://www.visualartsource.com/index.php?page=editorial&pcID=26&aID=1920 Author: DeWitt Cheng Curator: Lonnie Lee The mixed-media works of Cheryl Calleri and the oil paintings of Thekla Hammond, together exhibited under the unifying title "Coalesce," complement each other well enough. But the two artists went beyond that level of dialogue and coalesced — or, more prosaically, collaborated — on a joint project, a video installation, "Co-Motion," with music by Armando Mafu... Ian Kimmerly at Dolby Chadwick Gallery 6/5/13 Posted 6/5/13

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce Continuous Wave, an exhibition of new paintings by Ian Kimmerly. Kimmerly boldly embraces the disparate by integrating various styles and techniques into each painting. Softly blurred photorealistic figures slip between abstract gestures while gleaming, thickly impastoed streaks of paint are counterbalanced by bright, geometric pops of color. Though the final paintings depend on a number of different factors, his process typically involves the same set of... [more]

Alice Channer, Aaron Flint Jamison, Anicka Yi at Altman Siegel Gallery April 18th, 2013 - June 1st, 2013
Posted 4/23/13

O the sleeping bag contains the body but not the dreaming head on show at the Altman Siegel Gallery from April 18th to June 1st, features work by three artists; Alice Channer, Aaron Flint Jamison and Anicke Yi. The title is taken from a poem by Matthea Harvey, a dark meditation on containment, or it’s failure. This is the theme that unites the three artists, whose work at first seems unconnected in medium and subject. Alice Channer’s Body Fluids is the first to confront me as I enter the gallery- a large digital print that is draped over a steel bar hung near... [more]

I have struggled with this question ever since I started to paint. Having copied famous artists' work, made many still life and figure studies, and having painted for the simple sensual thrill of presenting beauty or ugliness, I am left with the certainty that art is much broader and deeper than these technic... Patricia Araujo at SOMA Grand October 26th, 2012 - December 15th, 2012

Paintings by Patricia Araujo, seen in a linear format at SOMA Grand.    “In general,  the most interesting artists work out their own salvation”, a quote from Oliver Thomas, Art teacher at Eton on the work of Alexander Thynn (Book 11, Top Hat and Tails). This artist is a friend of Patricia’s, and work is the operative word. Blithly and innocently Patricia was handed a project that would have killed the proverbial horse. There ought to be a limit by law on the number of hats and t... [more]

Ernest Doty at Sticks + Stones Gallery December 2nd, 2011 - December 2nd, 2011
Posted 1/13/12

Though the recent showing of Ernest Doty seemed to correlate with the end of the occupy movement here in Oakland, I, like my fellow art patrons, was kind of hoping that Doty's art would stand on it's own-without the need to justify the art with the movement. It seemed, however, that because Doty was so involved and distracted with the movement that it inhibited the material he showed. That is not to say that the pieces he selected were half-assed, they were simply lacking: lacking in the quantity... [more]
