30 Master Class in painting, but Surreal?
by
Todd Schorr at San Jose Museum of Art June 20th, 2009 - September 16th, 2009
Posted 8/14/09

The Todd Schorr show at the San Jose Museum of Art is an assault. The artist grabs you and wrings you out, then you stagger away, dazed. Mr. Schorr is important, a fact nicely recognized by the SJMA in this very large solo show, which gathers paintings from a myriad of collections, such as that of Leonardo DeCaprio. This retrospective features works as far back as the mid-80s, I seem to recall, with a brief stop in the early 1990s with some mid-size pieces, before dashing forward at breakneck spe... [more]

Swordofdamocles John Yoyogi Fortes at SFMOMA Caffé Museo by Melissa Wyss
by
John Yoyogi Fortes at Caffé Museo at SFMOMA May 21st, 2009 - June 30th, 2009
Posted 6/25/09

Gestural, textured and asymmetrical, John Yoyogi Fortes' show at the SFMOMA Caffé Museo is a punk rock alternative to the American modernist legends Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams currently showing upstairs.  While O'Keeffe's and Adams' work reflects the beauty of the outside world, Fortes' psychological landscapes strive to illustrate complexity of the self.  His canvases are layered with impulsive colors, patterns and shapes which accumulate to both expose and conceal.  Collaged images, of... Grab Your Suit, Don't Forget the Sunscreen: Leslie Morgan at Zonal

Leslie Morgan at Zonal June 19th, 2009 - July 31st, 2009
Posted 6/21/09

(Author's note: the following is excerpted from a longer post on my blog, Arteaser) On Friday, I ventured back to Hayes Valley for the opening of "Dive In" at Zonal: Featuring aquatic themed prints and paintings by Leslie Morgan, the show will be up through July: The nostalgic elements of Morgan's work fit well with Zonal's aesthetic: Live music by Grinn & Barrett: Most of the work in the show was paintings over photographs, including some from the "Pool Glee" series: A couple of Morgan's oil paintings from the "... Brett Amory at Fecal Face Dot Gallery June 17th, 2009 - June 20th, 2009
Posted 6/21/09

(Author's note: The following is excerpted from a longer post on my blog, Arteaser) We headed over to Fecal Face Dot Gallery (FFDG) for the latest installment of their "In-N-Out" series, which featured Brett Amory: I really enjoyed a new series of small paintings (above) based on a dream: Amory also had a couple of new pieces from the "Waiting" series up: Sadly, the show was only up for four days and is already down. As the name implies, the "In-N-Out" series are week long shows with openings on Thursdays. Amory (below right) was in attendance ta... [more]

(Author's note: the following is excerpted from a longer post on my blog, Arteaser) On Thursday, Anthony and I made our way to the SF offices of architecture and design firm, Gensler, for the opening of their latest staff-curated exhibit. The "Re:" show will be up through August 14 and focuses on works that use common or discarded materials: I found one of Dale Eastman's "One Moment at a Time" pieces in a conference room (above). Her "Re:" word was "Re:member," reflecting how her work is a recording of... [more]

Randall The Sublime and The Struggling Artist
by
Randall Stoltzfus at Limn Art Gallery April 18th, 2009 - May 30th, 2009

The Sublime and the Struggling Artist Randall Stoltzfus @ LIMN Gallery, San Francisco, Spring 2009         Art objects reflect society.  They are time capsules, spacial beings, they are what they are:handmade relics celebrating  existence according to a cult heroic tradition, a set of rules and directions according to the history of great works made before it.  Exhibitions celebrate the joy in each new work's break from the rules and repetition of the past and the discovery of ne... Process Oriented: "Time Lapse" Group Show at HangART Annex
by
at HANG ART April 1st, 2009 - April 30th, 2009
Posted 4/7/09

(Author's note: The following is an excerpt from a longer piece on my blog, Arteaser)   My next stop was the busy HangART Annex, for "Time Lapse," which is through the month of April: The show focused on the artistic process of four local artists: For Anthony May, the gallery had installed a collection of small sketches (above) as well as two large canvases (below): Lea Feinstein's paintings reflect the artist's use of gravity to distribute paint onto moisture resistant Tyvek (think FedEx pac... Full150 Regular Oddities: David Fullarton at HangART
by
David Fullarton at HANG ART April 1st, 2009 - April 30th, 2009
Posted 4/7/09

(Author's note: The following is an excerpt from a longer piece on my blog, Arteaser)   Next, I went across the street to HangART, where works by David Fullarton were on display in the rear gallery: The show, called "Once Again I Fail To Live Up To My Advance Publicity," will be up through the month of April: In addition to some larger collage canvases, many of Fullarton's pieces used non-traditional materials. The hand-written text was often humorous and self-depreciating:   [more]
