Karen Seneferu transformed a small room for "Passage" at Krowswork in Oakland (Jan. 29 - March 11).  Carefully-placed handmade sculptures and relics stand on the ground and are arrayed on the partially exposed wooden walls. White drawings made directly on the bare floor seem to be remnants from a ritual. Video of large round rising suns and moons projects on the largest wall. This space feels charged. Three sculptures resembling human figures (approx. 4' - 5'... [more]

Derek Weisberg : On Our San Francisco Watchlist
1/15/11 Posted 1/15/11

(Image: Derek Weisberg, Untitled [detail],  Low fire ceramics with mixed media shelves,  7"x20"x5",  2006; © Derek Weisberg) I create works of art that are emotional and psychological self-portraits. Through my work I aim to make sense of my life, my experiences, and the times I live. I do not wish to represent like a photo, instead to achieve an innerness. My goal is to create images, which are accessible and allow the viewer to have an experience which can not be easily articulated, but fe... [more]

Tags: David M. Roth, Jack Fischer Gallery, John Yoyogi Fortes "Runt", 2010, mixed media on canvas, 120" x 84" (diptych) John Yoyogi Fortes isn’t a street artist but he paints like one – one who’s especially well-versed in American and European Expressionism.  His specialty is the urban fever dream, a realm in which subcons... Written by ERICJ.KOS    Published: THURSDAY, 25 FEBRUARY 2010 Alameda resident and famed wealthy industrialist Mr. Tommy recently pooled his resources with fellow eccentrics and explorers d'Arci Bruno and Marc Ribaud to reach beyond the "Civilized Pale" and discover what lies out of conceivable reach for many Alamedans. Indeed, the indomitable Mr. Tommy made his fortune in the distilling, tobacco, vanilla and film industries, amassing the unbelievable wealth required to organize an expedition to the F... [more]

My Favorite Works at De Young Museum, San Francisco Today, I visited De Young Museum in San Francisco for the King Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of Pharaohs exhibit. It was a fantastic show, despite the fact that the most spectacular beautifully inlaid gold mask of the young king, who died at the age of 19, was not included in the current exhibit of these artifacts. Some old timers had the luck of viewing it when the show came to San Francisco decades ago. I cannot say that I was cheated out of somethi... [more]

Swordofdamocles John Yoyogi Fortes at SFMOMA Caffé Museo by Melissa Wyss
John Yoyogi Fortes at Caffé Museo at SFMOMA May 21st, 2009 - June 30th, 2009
Posted 6/25/09

Gestural, textured and asymmetrical, John Yoyogi Fortes' show at the SFMOMA Caffé Museo is a punk rock alternative to the American modernist legends Georgia O'Keeffe and Ansel Adams currently showing upstairs.  While O'Keeffe's and Adams' work reflects the beauty of the outside world, Fortes' psychological landscapes strive to illustrate complexity of the self.  His canvases are layered with impulsive colors, patterns and shapes which accumulate to both expose and conceal.  Collaged images, often hu... (Author's note: The following is excerpted from a longer post on my blog, Arteaser) We headed over to Fecal Face Dot Gallery (FFDG) for the latest installment of their "In-N-Out" series, which featured Brett Amory: I really enjoyed a new series of small paintings (above) based on a dream: Amory also had a couple of new pieces from the "Waiting" series up: Sadly, the show was only up for four days and is already down. As the name implies, the "In-N-Out" series are week long shows with openings on Thursdays. Amory (below right) was in attendan... [more]

(Author's note: This is an excerpt of a longer post on my blog, Arteaser)   For my last stop of the night, I went to Frey Norris Gallery, which was featuring Dana Harel's series, "Kin": For someone who has seen images of this series, it was great to see the life-size scale to which Ms. Harel draws her hand animals (below): What these pictures do not capture well is the fine detail of subtle textural mutations to the subject hand's skin, which are at once anatomically correct for the implied animal and incorrect for the human model: The show is up until May 3 in the downstairs of...
