Making and Framing Art in Shenyang and US
by
2/3/14 Posted 2/3/14

This is my last post reporting my trip to Shenyang, China, in September 2013. Whenever I visited home, I would raid some art supply stores near the renown Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, and carry some loots home. Last year, I purchased some lovely colored graphite and charcoal sticks and I tried out with some still life and portrait drawings when I was still in China: As usual, I also brought some of my completed works home as gifts, if they are small enough to fit into my luggage. Fay Ku at Eight Modern May 31st, 2013 - July 14th, 2013
Posted 6/28/13

Asa nisa masa, a phrase from Fellini’s 8½, is an incantation recalled from the childhood of the film’s protagonist, Guido. In the film we see a young Guido utter the phrase repeatedly while wildly jumping and flapping his arms in the hopes of summoning a painting on his bedroom wall to come to life. The current exhibition on view at Eight Modern gallery by Fay Ku owes its title to Guido’s memorable hymn. When you remove the second syllable of each word in the phrase asa nisa masa, what is left is... [more]

Dorothea Tanning at Gallery Wendi Norris January 10th, 2013 - March 2nd, 2013
Posted 1/15/13

Occupying the center, bellies hold babies, beer, guts (literal and proverbial), and intestines. They are a measure of our earthly life yet seem to take on a life of their own: ballooning, billowing, expanding, bloating, giving new shape to our bodies at any given time. In the work of Dorothea Tanning, the stomach is beautiful, sexual, and enchanting. Wandering around the exhibition of Tanning’s work at Gallery Wendi Norris, I came to a halt in front of Traffic Sign, 1970. But then, that seemed... [more]

Educated in a society of scientific materialist ideology and studying Marxism-... [more]

Amina Ahmed at Seven Art Limited November 4th, 2011 - December 10th, 2011
Posted 11/14/11

At the core of artist Amina Ahmed’s practice is the basic human desire of mark making. For this particular exhibition, ‘The Call,’ currently on at the Seven Art Limited gallery till 3rd December, Ahmed uses a variety of ways to explore the process of mark making, using mediums as varied as charcoal, ink, gum, tempera, paper, light and shadow, all attuned in ways best described as ‘... Peter Burega, steven seinberg at Selby Fleetwood Gallery February 4th, 2011 - April 1st, 2011
Posted 2/13/11

Selby Fleetwood Gallery is now representing Peter Burega of Santa Fe, NM and Steven Seinberg of Ashville, NC whose recent works present two distinct approaches to contemporary abstract expressionism. Seinberg’s atmospheric work in oil and charcoal on canvas highlights the quiet intimacy of the painting process through conspicuous drips, smears, washes, and personal text. The active markmaking and aggressively manipulated layers of oil on panel in Burega’s paintings display a rich, ... [more]
