There’s a weed smokin’ bass thrumming pill poppin’ party ashin’ whiskey drinkin’ boy in the back. P’tit Jean lights a spliff and takes a swig and says, “get me into trouble now.” A hard won laughter heats the door knobbin’ dance floor as skirts swirl with sex, limbs long and longing, and spit stings songs. For a hot sec there is no silence and no fight. This is a document of Paris in the 80s—but it could be New York or London or even Bombay... [more]

Nothing like the real thing

At least I can say I am in the stream. As careers go, "they" want you to have consistent showings. This adds credibility to your portfolio. It also insures that the flavor you are selling is something other people have already tried. So I am thankful, gratefull for these opportunities. Though I confess, I always am at a loss at these affairs. Again it is like speed dateing, What are you supposed to say? I should think of a script or just talk about each piece like it is one of my chi... [more]

In Pictures: Rio's Baile Funk Culture   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

Baile Funk and Rio De Janeiro are inseperable kin; the unmistakable bassline sounds thump over the hillside favelas of the city, most of which have been pacified as part of a governmental iniative that began in 2008. From Rocinha to Cantagalo each Baile has its own particular flavor, an intense mix of sex, rhythm and hedonism. It's not just the unmistakable "Um Cha Cha Um Cha" that is an intergral part of Rio, but its ambience and aesthetics, that epitomize in many ways the Brazilian spirit. Fren... [more]

Guimarães, Portugal, Oct. 2014: When South Korea won the Golden Lion at the 2014 Venice Biennale of Architecture, architect Minsuk Cho said the award could help “trigger the reality of a unified Korea.” While North Korea is making art at the Mansudae Art Studio, South Korea is building the next generation of art stars—in New York. With Korean art increasingly in the spotlight, “The Lineage of Vision: Progress through Persistence,” which opened Wednesday at the Korean... [more]

A Cool, Darkling Swirl: Benjamin Millepied’s LA Dance Works at the Ace   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

What literature is to words and music is to sound, dance is to movement. Refined into a language—from the cosmic shimmy to the mash-potato, Viennese waltzing to a raver’s speaker humping, and of course, that formal staging from ballet to music videos we call simply Dance—we take movement and communicate joy or boredom, despair or titillation, or if good, all of the above. Seeing the LA Dance Project last weekend at the Ace in Los Angeles, it was hard not to find the whole af... [more]

Frieze Previews: Jérôme Bel's Inflammatory Disabled Theatre Makes Its London Debut   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

It seems like this year, perhaps influenced by the performance series 14 Rooms that took place at Art Basel a few months ago, Frieze has taken a performative turn. Many of its special projects incorporate live shows, and a new section called Frieze Live will introduce performance-based works and reenactments of historical performances at the fair itself. For example, the Japanese duo United Brothers will offer the visitors a soup made of vegetables grown in the region of Fukushima’s 2011 nuc... [more]

Art from Music <----> Music from Art
by
9/29/14 Posted 10/14/14

...In thinking about the act of choreography, the concept of visualizing music is one that has inspired my work - particularly this past year, in my paintings which illustrate personal responses to different songs. For example, my print above is a metaphorical mashup of Prince and Bob Dylan, combining lyrics and concepts from both artists. There is an interesting quote from Balanchine on Ballet Austin's site about making art from music: "Music like Stravinsky’s cannot be illustrated; one mu... [more]

My first introduction to performance art that reclaims public and architectural spaces was meeting the brilliantNoemie LaFrance, acclaimed site-specific Choreographer, Director and Producer of Sens Production, in 2003 in New York City. Subsequently I attended her debut work, "Descent" which took place on a spiraling staircase. Having also created a piece on a stairwell that I'd titled the same name, I connected with LaFrance's creative vision. Here is my "Descent" image which I shot in 1999 at... [more]

The Importance of Being Awkward at Portland's Time Based Arts Festival   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

at Portland Institute of Contemporary Art September 11th, 2014 - September 24th, 2014

Awkwardness is arguably a failure in a relationship to the terms of interaction. In our hyper-mediated 21st century we live increasingly curated lives where each action or image is constructed for specific, often distinct, audiences. We have become skilled at navigating multiple modes of communication and mediated performance that resist the risks of connection. Cautious of the misstep, we compartmentalize to avoid the slip into reading from the wrong script, preaching to the wrong choir—v... [more]

My Avatar and Me: An Interview with Jacolby Satterwhite

New York, Nov. 2013: The digital age is currently facing certain adaptations that bring into question the modern’s faithfulness to understanding the past; texting incoherent typos being confused with Freudian slips was not considered by the original teacher and therefore could nullify the slip of the tongue theory. Psychological models in human development did not anticipate dualism in identity formation: the physical being and the digital projection of it via an online profile. Jacolby Satter... [more]

Dismembered Appendages: Kandis Williams   Pick-button-0f29c6c075c514ef3a12253f1d60018e

Kandis Williams cut her teeth in New Orleans and the gritty soul of the southern city shines through in her large-scale collages and sculptures. In the spirit of The Big Easy, Williams’ work carries a veneer of tragedy and violence that hovers on the surface of her images. Traces of the city, its mingling with the occult, and the impact it has made on Williams’ vision are embedded in each work and seem inseparable from their presentation. Her work is not delicate. Far from it, in fact: it trac... [more]
