About Chandu Mhatre: Chandu has been a news photographer for over 40 years having extensively shot many seminal moments of recent Indian history. Throughout his career he has worked for a wide variety of media groups and organizations. Apart from all the leading publications leading international magazines and newspapers such as Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Forbes, The Times London, The Independent, CBS 60 Minutes, The Associated Press, Reuters New Agency & Picture Group Photo News Agency USA has published his works. He was commissioned to photograph the arts and crafts of India for the first Indian Festival held in the UK. He has covered historical news events in India including the rise of the Naxalite movement in West Bengal in 1970 and Jaiprakash Narayan’s non-cooperation movement, which transformed India’s political scene. Mhatre had a unique opportunity to shoot the emergency rule in India in June, 1975 to 1977 as well as a personal photo feature of ousted Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1978.
