Joyce Pensato
Joyce Pensato, at Friederich Petzel. Great drawings... she really shreds up the paper. It got a little weird for me in there because all of these big-lipped black-and-white dancing characters started to look a little minstrelsy... even the giant Lisa Simpson became a big mammy. Once I got that vibe it was hard to block it out. I used to make big charcoal drawings of a character.RELATED: fun video of Joyce Pensato dancing in the studio.PLUS: Christoph Buchel's Mickey.... Postscript Scotland
Sunday afternoon and I'm back at Maison de Lux, having dashed out in the rain for a cappuccino and pain chocolat at the cafe around the corner and now unpacking to the tune of Glasvegas (see above for the Glasgow Tourist Board Anthem* "I'm Gonna Get Stabbed"). Overall, going to Scotland was the best decision I've ever made, and I highly recommend it. The exchange rate is tricky but things are cheaper in real terms. My long weekend felt like ages and I achieved exactly what I set out to do w... [more]

From Sorrel Ahlfeld and Fred Benenson… The joy created by George W. Bush’s impending departure from the Presidency could only possibly be overshadowed by the excitement of Barack Obama’s election. So now there are two reasons to celebrate! I’m know you’ve already celebrated Obama’s victory but have you taken the time to really think about what the end of these last 8 years means to you? The end of an era? I asked myself that question recently and decided that the best way to commemora... [more]

Asian/American/Modern Art: Shifting Currents
I went to the deYoung Museum to see several shows but the one that i want to highlight is Asian/American/Modern Art: Shifting Currents, 1900–1970October 25, 2008 — January 18, 2009It was fantastic! It isn't getting much press and when you go to the website, you don't see it mentioned immediately but i really enjoyed it. It was one of those shows that makes me want to rush back to the studio because it was very inspiring. I bought two postcards - i would have bought more but they didn't h... [more]

Knight: MOCA board as adrift as ever
Christopher Knight updates us on the MOCA board situation via the LAT's Culture Monster blog. As I wrote (again) on Thursday, it's time for the trustees who don't want to save MOCA to get out of the way (read: resign) so that those who value MOCA can try to save it. And those trustees who want to save the place ought be more public in their support. The current stasis is doing no good.... [more]

A plea for optimism
There is a question circulating around the art world blogosphere: Will Art Basel Miami Beach, and all of its attendant satellite fairs, be a gallery killer? The rationale behind the question works something like this: Given the way the art world’s schedule runs, one assumes that most galleries paid for their art fair real estate many months ago.  And given that many galleries have begun to rely upon their fair sales to remain profitable, if not solvent, in a down turn, the art fairs begin to... Oranges and Sardines: Artist Talk
11/9/08 -- Curator Gary Garrels in conversation with artists Mark Grotjahn, Wade Guyton, Mary Heilmann, Amy Sillman, Charline von Heyl, and Christopher Wool. Long and not very informative but for the sublime Mary Heilmann and the silent Wade Guyton. Wool is, as usual, an ass. Sillman and von Heyl are pedantic. At one point the question was raised about new models. How about Jacques Rancière: http://www.artandresearch.org.uk/v2n1/ranciere.html Yes, Greenberg is important but, really, Mary He... [more]

Frank Cieciorka: RIP
On November 24, 2008, artist Frank Cieciorka (che-CHOR-ka) died from emphysema at the age of 69. Sélection ACBD Prix de la Critique 2009
Over at Le briographe, Jérôme Briot has posted the official selection of BD's according to the Association des Critiques et journalistes de Bande Dessinée (ACBD). It's a decidedly sober affair, with the exception of the classic re-release of Emile Bravo's Spirou, and Jean-Yves Ferri's De Gaulle à la plage. The addition of Posy Simmonds' Tamara Drewe is a welcome acknowledgement that BD can and is created by members of the English speaking world. The rest of them are fine and dandy, a smatt... [more]

Studs Terkel Passes Away
I wish the wonderful patron saint of Chicago and America had lived to see Obama elected. The author-radio host-actor-activist and national treasure has died. "My epitaph? My epitaph will be 'Curiosity did not kill this cat,'" he once said. Studs died Friday afternoon in his home on the North Side. At his bedside was a copy of his latest book, P.S. Further Thoughts From a Lifetime of Listening, scheduled for release this month. He was 96 years old. Studs Terkel was part of a great Chicago literary... [more]

Making A Piece About Making A Piece
It is clear that there are associative procedural similarities between curatorial practice and studio practice. Both actions involve, or theoretically ought to involve, an appreciation of the relevance of art history (past and current) and the “skilled” manipulation of material/image/context to manifest representations and/or experiences that have aesthetic and/or intellectual resonance in contemporary society. The essentially “positivist” hope is that such endeavors advance society culturally... [more]

7 Factors to Separate a Good Niche Social Media Site from a Bad One
Throughout a number of posts on this blog I’ve written about niche social media sites and their potential to be an excellent source of traffic for blogs. The idea behind niche sites as opposed to major social media sites like Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon is that the visitors you receive from niche sites will be far more targeted, and generally higher quality traffic. Because the niche sites focus on content that relates to a particular topic, the visitors that arrive at your site should... [more]

Copyright in painting style?

Every time I think about what has happened my body just shivers with emotions and my eyes well up. I remember traveling across the US by car as a child being forced to drive 20-30 miles out of the way in order to find a place that would rent us a room for the night, being denied service in restaurants for not being white, called names, being treated like unwanted stepchildren and, you know many...
