A New Sentimental Journey is the title of a
philosophical text, designed as a journal, qu'Alair Gomes wrote in
English, returning from a trip to Europe in 1983. Over seven hundred
photos illustrate this trip. Evidence of his mastery of classical art,
images of Alair Gomes mention his photographic work. Here the
development of the erotic male body is conceptually identical to the
famous series of photos of young people on the beach in Rio de Janeiro,
exhibited in Paris at the Fondation Cartier in 2001.
The photographs, like the five hundred pages of text that accompany it, argue that the vision of the divine Alair Gomes, whose foundation is in Eros: young male body, the creation of God. The male body is the idea behind his argument, in terms of aesthetics, religion, and ethics. The photographer Miguel Rio Branco, curator of the exhibition, created a series of coherent images by making a choice among the entire collection. While integrating perfectly with his work, this series, that the public will discover for the first time, reveals a new facet of the art of Alair Gomes, who died in 1992 |
