I slowly built a few contacts found via social media and open calls on my Instagram account and Tinder. All of a sudden I was invited into a window through to other people’s daily lives. Using their accounts as a diary, as a means of protest, as a cry for help and many of the times as a way to feel validated and loved. We live in a society of immediate consumption for immediate satisfaction, and discard whatever we presently have for the next product to consume. I was drawn to Snapchat’s ephemeral nature but cheated on its game by screen capturing my favorite moments sent by people, always aware that the app notified of each screen capture to the user. ‘High Wild & Free: An Internet Story’ is an investigative project into the psyche of contemporary society and the ways we relate to each other, how we seek to be constantly liked and find meaning in fictitious relationships with strangers. Is our emotional landscape online parallel to our In Real Life one?

The works that will be displayed explore different techniques of photo transferring, collage and oil paint on linen, and play with double entendres on a series of ink on watercolour paper paintings.

All works displayed are the result of my two month residency at Cité Internationale Des Arts. A preview of the first ten works made in London in late 2014 were exhibited in an Open Studio journée as part of Spain(NOW!) 2014 curated by Toni Ferrer and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture of Spain.
Mon, 20 Apr 2015 20:07:54 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/par/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/par/Events/list Group Show - Cité internationale des Arts - March 31st - April 18th
No form and All substance

No form and All substance est l’exposition d’un artiste fictif sans atelier. Stemming from a desire to film sound, record places, and dive into the process of a material construction and destruction, these films are screened using a projection apparatus that integrates an exhibition of monochrome screens/paintings.

Invited to create a programme and events and exhibitions at le Plateau from march 2014 on, Mathieu Copeland and Philippe Decrauzat have each time used these spaces and this time to involve artists from the visual and music fields—using the exhibition format, or he denser format of the event—and film, their end purpose being to pursue their film collaboration to present to the eye and ear, in the form of an immersive arrangement, something that has already been seen, heard and experienced.

Creating a dialogue between filmed images, painting and sound production, these films bring together a constellation of artists, superimposing and fragmentating the 16 mm film stock. Filming musicians including Alan Licht, Ellen Fullman or FM Einheit as they realise the soundtrack for these films to be, creating a dialogue between works of art and the camera, with Marcia Hafif’s drawings or a painting by Peter Halley, filming moments and places of creation such as the realisation of a painting by John M Armleder, the re-enactment of a lecture-demonstration by Gustav Metzger, Swiss artist and “researcher” Emma Kunz’s Grotto, and production sites including a printing press in Marrakech, a textile manufacture or a paint factory, the film’s components shape a linear assemblage of overlaid realities.

This programme has been the subject of a series of manifestos drawn up guests artists, lending each exhibition and event its title and thus connecting all the elements of the project, like links in one and the same huge enselmbe, offering us a re-reading of a history of modernity seen through visual arts and music.
Mon, 20 Apr 2015 13:01:07 +0000 http://www.artslant.com/par/Events/list http://www.artslant.com/par/Events/list Sibel Kocakaya - Galerie Dukan - June 2nd - July 18th
We are pleased to present, with Alain Mustapha, collector to whom we gave carte blanche, the first solo exhibition of Turkish artist Sibel Kocakaya (1986, Istanbul) at Dukan gallery in Paris.

“All works staged by Sibel Kocakaya, paintings, photographs, videos and performances, explore the fields of our relationship to others and to the space around us. Through her works and by systematically using her own body as a medium, she invites us to deepen this relationship and allows us a better understanding of its different aspects.

One of my favorite pieces is a photograph entitled «Woman with the flying broom»: nothing is more common than a woman holding a broom, somehow an almost universal symbol of the traditional condition of women. As if by magic, Sibel was able, in one glance, to turn this item into a powerful instrument of liberation.

It is the way that she looks at things that so often delights me, diverting objects such as duvets, mattresses, shutters, vacuum cleaners or hangers from their everyday use to express universal values which go beyond her own culture and roots”.

Alain Mustapha

“The documentary character of photography, its convincing aspect in terms of representation, and being visual evidence facilitate artistic reading. In Sibel Kocakaya’s works, photography is more telling than the representative sense of persuasiveness of the objects/objectiveness constructed to be photographed. As this fact is based on the persuasiveness of photography, it also performs a presentation aimed to draw the viewer into the trap of visual representation. Because of its medium, viewing photography turns into a double vision by dichotomizing from the reality of image towards the reality of imitation. The formations in the constructions of Sibel Kocakaya are “there” without a solid ground – they refer to the rear of the existing formations as well as beyond them. And this positions the viewer between the duality of the representation of the reality itself and the indicators of understanding (afterwards)”.

Asst. Prof. Mürteza Fidan

Sibel Kocakaya 1986, Istanbul Lives and works in Istanbul

Asst.
