Beloved poet, writer, artist, and art critic Rene Ricard passed away Sunday at the age of 67. Ricard was an incredibly influential force in the art movements coming out of New York City during the 70s, 80s, and 90s, counting Andy Warhol, Robert Hawkins, and Keith Haring among his colleagues and friends.

A teenage runaway, Ricard fled his hometown of Acushnet, Massachusetts for Boston and later New York in the late 60s, immersing himself in the art and literary circles. It was there he met Andy Warhol and became first his protégée and later on, one of his famed Superstars, acting in Kitchen (1965), Chelsea Girls (1966), and even playing Andy Warhol himself in The Andy Warhol Story (1966).

Although also an acclaimed painter and critic, Ricard was first and foremost a poet. The DIA Art Foundation published his first anthology of poetry in 1979. Later he published God With Revolver (1990) and Love Poems (1999), which he co-authored with Robert Hawkins. He published his work in The Paris Review and Angel Hair. Through his regular contributions in Artforum, Ricard helped launch the careers of many major contemporary artists by the likes of Keith Haring, Julian Schnabel, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Towards the end of his life, Ricard was working with text and images, bringing together his two passions on massive canvases.
