3/31/20 Posted 3/5/09

Hello frends! I am an artist. My roots take place in St.Petersburg, which has great architecture, culture and history that influenced me once and forever. Today, in the times of technical progress, mass production and new artificial materials I search for inspiration in the foundation of the Arts - old Russian Orthodox icons, Renaissance and folk cultures. I seek out look for new shapes and images within my themes using different materials, but my favorite is glass for its plasticity and abi... [more]

Shahkaar - In Conversation with Sumaya Durrani
by
12/1/16 Posted 2/11/16

As we flock around her right after our final MA Visual Arts First Year Juries and I request some time for an interview as directed by my professor Sir Quddus Mirza (Editor of ArtNow), there is a yes and a no in the answer that I get. The word enigmatic is a constant in all the published material that I’ve read about Sumaya Durrani in my humble quest to know a bit about her and we, the visual arts Master's students frozen in the space of her eloquence, are proof that it’s true. Dur... [more]

Cracked and imperfect, resting atop a section of otherwise crisp white marble floor, is a carpet of gridded reddish dirt. At the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, in a biannual exhibition tasked with representing local creativity, a portrait of the region’s artistic practice takes shape—installed alongside the very firmament from which it was excavated. The earth, the grit, the material of the city—literal and imagined—makes its way into the museum. “It's a dynamic moment in... [more]

Annabelle Craven-Jones at Cruise & Callas June 25th - July 23rd
Posted 6/21/16

Transmitting information is inherent in today’s networked Internet Age. The information structures of our digital surroundings resemble the inner transmitting systems of nerves and their contacts, the synapses. With the help of messenger substances, neurotransmitters like serotonin pass on information and thereby activate the inner neural system. In her installation Conditions for Neurotransmission [P.O.V.] artist Annabelle Craven-Jones visualizes the mutual effects of both information systems and... [more]

Rodney McMillian at Studio Museum in Harlem March 24th - June 26th
Posted 6/6/16

Upon entering Rodney McMillian: Views from Main Street at the Studio Museum in Harlem, brisk piano notes float out over the exhibition space followed by an almost euphoric serenade by Erykah Badu. Her voice is emanating from a video near the entrance of the gallery where a T-Rex puppet bops around a stage singing along, mouthing out every trill with his toothy jaw gaping open and shut. On the puppet-sized podium hangs a banner reading “The Neshoba County Fair Assc.—Giant House Party... [more]

In the coming days, Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to sign off on (by not vetoing) a Uniform Land Use Review Proposal that will officially add Socrates Sculpture Park to the city park system and literally “put it on the map.” On this plein air exhibition space’s 30th anniversary, a more fitting symbol of acceptance could hardly be more encouraging. For a place that has shifted from ferry slip, city landfill, illegal landfill, and finally appropriated into a sculpture park, transitio... [more]

Nathan Mabry Makes Art in a Post-Modernist Modernist World
by
Nathan Mabry at Cherry and Martin 4/25/16 Posted 4/25/16

Nathan Mabry’s exhibition gripgrabstacksqueeze, at Cherry and Martin, opens with a black, partially abstract, figurative sculpture suggestive of indigenous art placed on an oil drum. The upper half of this totemic form seems to have emerged from the drum, its dark and glutinous texture reminiscent of tar. With this opening work, Mabry succinctly kicks off the show with a meditation on the fetishism of early western cultures and their artifacts, as well as the loss of these cultures as a re... [more]

Artist’s gloves
by
4/24/16 Posted 4/24/16

Work represents taking prints from the hand of the artist, creating a unique usable object (gloves, made of latex). The subject indicates the question of mass production in the world in general, and the mass production of art, and therefore raises another issue of authenticity of the product itself. Taking direct prints from artists skin, leads us to giving and taking personal identity, which is also used in translating to massive identity, and therefore it raises another question of consuming pe...
