Hello frends! I am an artist. My roots take place in St.Petersburg, which has great architecture, culture and history that influenced me once and forever. Today, in the times of technical progress, mass production and new artificial materials I search for inspiration in the foundation of the Arts - old Russian Orthodox icons, Renaissance and folk cultures. I seek out look for new shapes and images within my themes using different materials, but my favorite is glass for its plasticit... [more]

Allegorical Painting "Birds and Men"
by
2/25/15 Posted 2/25/15

I don't consider myself as a colorist; yet, sometimes, I managed to utilize some vibrant colors to create paintings with vibrant colors, bold, striking, yet harmonious, such as my 2003 oil painting, Birds and Men. Birds and Men / 鳥與人 / Vögel und Menschen Oil on Canvas 30" x 40" 2003 With that painting, and several others made in 2003, I started my Apocalypse Series, intended to document human sufferings inflicted by reckless or repressive political, religious or cultural forces. The dire... [more]

Kehinde Wiley at Brooklyn Museum of Art February 20th - May 24th
Posted 2/20/15

“Kehinde Wiley is everywhere right now,” said Eugenie Tsai, John and Barbara Vogelstein Curator of Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum, as the small press tour began. This was not an exaggeration by any means; Wiley garnered recent attention when his paintings appeared as backdrops in Fox's Empire, a highly stylized melodrama from Lee Daniels and Danny Strong that collages black stereotypes while positioning black bodies into a King Lear-like drama, and for his fashion week photoshoot wit... Las Vegas-based photographer Marshall Scheuttle explores the American landscape, documenting archetypes of American youth and the narratives which develop around them—exploring our place and identity within the world. Borderland, his first body of work, focused on the individual and their surroundings; his latest project, Morning Star, turns its attention to the specific dynamic of Las Vegas, in response to the stories he uncovered in his earlier series. Scheuttle shoots analogue using a lar... [more]

"Swinging London" Meets Conceptual Photography at C/O's Blow-Up
by
at C/O Berlin 2/18/15 Posted 2/18/15

C/O Berlin recently moved to its new home, the Amerika Haus, a 1950s architectural trademark that saw little of the vicious consumerism and booming hedonism that characterized the so-called "Swinging 60s," yet plays perfect host to an exhibition centered on the era. C/O's current exhibition Blow-Up revolves around Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni's iconic 1966 film of the same name. Photography’s ability to picture reality is challenged both in the movie, as well as in the exhibitio... [more]

The Burden of Represent: 200 Years of African American Art   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

at Philadelphia Museum of Art January 10th - April 5th
Posted 2/12/15

When the Philadelphia Museum of Art announced Represent: 200 Years of African American Art last November, my reactions were mixed. The timely press release reporting that the museum would showcase a retrospective of African American art felt almost like a needed institutional response in a year notable for the increased visibility of racial injustice and police brutality in the US. Given Philadelphia’s large black and activist communities, expectations for the PMA to accurately and sensitive... [more]

Titus Kaphar Pulls Back the Curtains on Racial Injustice Past and Present   Pick-button-5bf6c1b36c3b74ec8f312c7c9f6f1ae3

If 2014 is to be remembered by one social narrative in America, it’s the involvement of law enforcement in the black community. The world was still mourning the death of Trayvon Martin when NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio announced his promise to end the often abused, racial profiling police tactic known as stop-and-frisk; Michael Brown was fatally shot in Ferguson by a cop—so were Rumain Brisbon and Ezell Ford—and the video of Eric Garner’s last words “I can’t breathe&... Artist As Mother
by
2/5/15 Posted 2/5/15

RUTH CHASE The hardest part of motherhood was that everything that makes me an artist, making motherhood that much harder for me. My daughter started off colicky, never wanting to go to anyone else. She constantly was nursing to soothe herself, and only wanted to be on me, without stimulation whatsoever from the outside world. This lasted for 4 years. During this time I felt isolated, confused, and completely out of my league being her mother. It took many years, books, and couches to figure... [more]
