By Jamie Solis Vintage films are known to have an intrinsic cult following. Maybe it’s because they remind us of the matte simplicity that’s fading in our digital society, or it could be the growing appreciation for classic features—when storylines were still unique and theatrics took fearless risks. Either way, we find ourselves attracted to old school cinema and the bold propaganda-esque designs that adorn their artwork. Regardless the reason for our fantastic obsession, posters from moti... June 1st - June 30th

I was recently driving in a thriving, mostly immigrant, neighborhood of Los Angeles. While stopped at a light I saw the following sign: Tax Preparation /Travel Agency. It was not unified corporate branding by a long shot. It was, however, two businesses which the investment in a single computer might make possible. Categorically it was a funny space. No one likes taxes and everyone wants to go on vacation. A perfect case of opposites attract. It reminded me of the parings of surprising, unlikel... [more]

Group Show at Jhaveri Contemporary > India
April 24th - May 24th
Posted 5/20/13

‘Considering Collages’: a survey show of collages is exciting by definition because it’s a rare occurrence. Collages, especially the paper-and-glue  ( French ‘coller’ meaning ‘ to glue / to paste’) kinds,  which are often  playful experiments in forms, materials and contexts made from found objects,  tick exactly the wrong kind of boxes as far as the contemporary Indian art scene is concerned. But the post 1947 collagescape at Jhaveri Contemporary with 14 artists ( born bet... by
Parul Thacker at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke > India
March 19th - April 29th
Posted 4/28/13

After a visit to the wonderland of forms that’s Parul Thacker’s first solo at Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, the whole process of meaning-making  ( of contemporary art) is bound to come under fresh scrutiny. All the available texts on  the artist and her works, struggle to put her into  a context, and visibly strain to find a broader theme beyond the striking yet enigmatic forms. And it’s not hard to see why. Her background is unconventional (Bachelor’s in textile design at Sophia Polytechnic Mumbai, then a  ... [more]

Alice Channer, Aaron Flint Jamison, Anicka Yi at Altman Siegel Gallery > San Francisco

O the sleeping bag contains the body but not the dreaming head on show at the Altman Siegel Gallery from April 18th to June 1st, features work by three artists; Alice Channer, Aaron Flint Jamison and Anicke Yi. The title is taken from a poem by Matthea Harvey, a dark meditation on containment, or it’s failure. This is the theme that unites the three artists, whose work at first seems unconnected in medium and subject. Alice Channer’s Body Fluids is the first to confront me as I enter the gallery- a large digital print that is draped over a steel bar hung n... [more]

by
Gretta Sarfaty at Sartorial Contemporary Art > London
March 19th - April 5th
Posted 4/11/13

Gretta Sarfaty gained international recognition in the late 70’ as a body-art and performance artist. Beginning with a traditional medium of painting, she early started to experiment with new media and performance. Even if her art has remained authentically ingenious over the years, the ways of her expression have changed, reflecting the evolution of digital technology. She has never been dogmatic: even when expressing a strongly feminist approach, she moves smoothly around multitude of questi... [more]

by Ami Kealoha in Culture on 23 February 2006 Brooklyn-based artist Jacob Williams' day-glo psychedelia already looks like a trip through a Disneyland ride on drugs, which makes Tim Regan's recent video piece (created to announce the opening reception for Williams' solo installation "Nightmare of the Haunted Buddha") a natural fit. Set to a dramatic Psycho-esque soundtrack, the animation sets Williams' mountains, wild-haired women, and panthers in motion, which nicely establishes... [more]
