The Sueanne Shirzay Gallery is pleased to announce its new featured show “John H. Howard Recent Works-- Landscapes and Abstracts”, which will open January 27. The opening reception is Sunday, January 27, 4-6 P.M. The public is welcome. The show will run for 3 weeks, through February 17. John H. Howard, who currently resides in Long Beach, N.Y., was born in London in 1940. He attended the Camberwell School of Art from 1956 to 1961, graduating with a BA in Fine Art (painting). He first visited New York in 1968 and showed paintings from that extended trip at the South London Art Gallery the same year. In the early 70’s he joined the Artist’s co-op at St. Katherine’s Dock and later at Stepney Green. During those years he travelled and showed extensively in Europe. A One-Man show at Belgis-Friedel in New York prompted an eventual move to the U.S. and by 1984 a parallel career in illustration had developed. Initially editorial it rapidly expanded to encompass major design, advertising and corporate clients. In this field, John has been the recipient of many awards including six silver, one bronze and one gold medal from the New York and Los Angeles Society of Illustrators. His work is in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian. the Library of Congress and the MTA, New York. In 1997 he was the “Invited Guest of Honor” at the “Homage a Lumiere” show in Montreal. In 2000 his paintings were chosen by the Albright-Knox for a travelling show of works on paper and recently he was awarded “Best in Show” at the Long Beach Annual Fine Arts Show. His work continues to appear in a long prestigious list of galleries and publications. “The amazing thing about John as an artist is not just the multitude of styles he paints in, but how he has perfected each one. It’s rare to find an artist so versatile and accomplished,” states Sueanne Shirzay, owner of the Gallery, who first met Mr. Howard when she hired him to do a cover illustration for CloseUp magazine in 1989.
