Join us at Lucky Gallery for the Closing Party for “Wearing Whitman’s Words; A Typographic Exploration,” with poet Sara Sowers who will read the quotes from the show in context, followed by a performance by the band Voyager. Curated by Ben Peterson, the exhibition features t-shirt designs by nine new york designers and collectives using quotes from Leaves of Grass.
Sara Sowers studied English literature and Classics, devoting much time and brain to learning Latin and ancient Greek, as an undergraduate at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, then went on to earn an M.F.A. in poetry writing at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 2001. Sower’s poems have been published here and there since then, hopefully coagulating toward a cogent book-length work of poetry.
VOYAGER is a Boston based melodic doom/post-metal band, arranged with past members of bands like Waking Judea and The Locomotive Espada. The band combines a wide variety of influences, creating a style of post-metal that fuses the melancholy and melody of bands like Cult of Luna and Katatonia with massive, crushing riffs and a sense of urgency hinting at their roots in hardcore and sludge (ala Crowbar, Will Haven, Helmet etc).
Fast becoming known for their dynamic and sometimes ‘trance-inducing’ live performances, the band released a well-received self-titled debut EP in 2008 on Forgotten Empire records, and currently have both a vinyl-only split and a proper full length record in the works, due to be released in 2010.
“Wearing Whitman’s Words; A Typographic Exploration” Closing Party is at Lucky Gallery, January 9th from 6-9 pm. Food and drink will be provided.
