Street artist/engineer Kentaro Fujioka's statement: I ride my bicycle everyday in New York City. In this series, Locus of Momentum, I use the same bicycle I ride in the city to draw the image on paper and canvas. Each drawing is done with graphite on paper or canvas. I ride on my bicycle on top of the laid-out surface to create a mark between the tire and the paper. These lines are very unique to the technique. The qualities of the lines directly shows how they get affected by physics of the act (gravity, momentum, inertia, pressure, friction). I always like working with texture. Here texture is created in the imprinting process between the textures of the paper and the tire. This texture gives timelessness to the line. Each groove of the rubber tire imprints (record) itself on the surface as my weight causes the pressure between the tire and paper. It is a line but it's also a record of the sequential moments of my travel on the wheels. There is no preconceived design in my head. These drawings are spontaneous. But each line is drawn carefully in order to create a composition.I try to work as though the accumulated lines are in consonance. Momentum implies not only the bicycle's movement but also the movement of my life in New York at this moment. I, like other New Yorkers, love the city and love being in the city's landscape.
