> DESCRIPTION

Curator Pati Hertling will moderate a discussion with the artists featured in modern modern, an exhibition featuring 34 artists who share an aesthetic sensibility that is influenced by Berlin and New York, the cities where they live and work. They communicate this sensibility by approaching the canvas or material emotionally rather than conceptually. References to modernism are visible in these works of art: new media is quasi-absent and most of the artists paint, draw, and sculpt, thus utilizing more traditional means of representation. However, other characteristics place this body of work outside the definition of modern art: there are no distinctions between figuration, abstraction, conceptualism, or expressionism, suggesting that such distinctions are no longer relevant. The approach is direct and intuitive.
