Paradise” is a concept that implies a perfected state of being, a spiritual fullness or a secure emotional place. Now and then, we can catch a glimpse of it in our minds. Some suggest that art commemorates that experience, reminding us that, real or imagined, we have access to a higher state of being. Religion, philosophy, literature, music and science, all in their specific forms, also pursue the dream of finding and sustaining a state of perfection, nirvana. The summer exhibition, “Paradise,” pays tribute to the tacit pursuit of perfection in art. This exhibition presents a varied group of artists: Agnes Martin, Claes Oldenberg, Robert Mangold, Jim Dine, Robert Irwin, Zhang Huan, Hai Bo, Lee Ufan, Kiki Smith, and Elizabeth Murray. Collectively, they represent a breadth of cultures and philosophical positions in art. Metaphorically, they suggest there are many visual languages to address the idea of perfection and many roads to “Paradise.” “Paradise” is a trans-cultural concept and there is no one image of it that is adequate for all. But that doesn’t stop us from trying to find it.
