The artists in More Than Naked disguise neither their materials nor their methods - cardboard is cardboard, a rolled carpet is very much a rolled carpet. Even when something is made to look like something else, say a lump of graphite is carved to look like a handkerchief, there is no attempt by the artist to make you think the carved handkerchief is an actual handkerchief - the graphite retains its dark intractable nature, its "graphite-ness". However, this work is not rarefied or detached from the audience – it transcends its materials and engages us. How so? The artists are using materials we're familiar with from our own lives - cardboard, pink insulation, carpeting, but they're using it in unfamiliar ways. This can be both disconcerting and amusing (and there's a lot of humor in this work). It's like discovering a friend's hidden talent - a joyful surprise which makes you look at your friend differently, with greater affection, but also with a sense of wonder.
