> DESCRIPTION

The Cinema presents a program of moving images culled from a range of genres and disciplines, including cinematic works, video games, and user-generated online content, that relate to EXPO 1: New York’s ecological and sociopolitical themes. The program is founded on works made between 2004 and the present, a period of time in which issues like globalization and climate change became major concerns in politics and media. In 2004 the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami inaugurated an ongoing era of unprecedented natural disasters. It is also the year Facebook launched, shortly followed by YouTube and countless other social media platforms that cumulatively transformed the ways moving images are created, distributed, and consumed.

In addition to the cinema program, a marathon screening of material related to EXPO will be presented through Are.na, an internet software that enables users to collect and share media through topical channels.
