> DESCRIPTION

Marc Jancou Contemporary is pleased to announce the opening of Some Feelings, 1984, 1970, a collection of works by New York-based artist Carter.

Drawing from Carter’s cross-media body of work to date, Some Feelings, 1984, 1970 spans painting, photography, and sculpture. Exploring shifting concepts of the human body, the interiors they inhabit and personal identity, the work included in the exhibition exemplifies Carter’s ongoing investigation into the nature of the self through portraiture, transformation and disguise. Presenting a poetic shift in time, Carter has reached back into his archive to present historic pieces alongside newer works - scratching the surface in a 'long line' of study, no matter the medium used.

Carter has gained critical recognition in the past decade with his complex collaged paintings, “anonymous” sculptural busts and works in video and Polaroid photography. He has woven the work done in his studio practice into two feature films that he both wrote and directed: Maladies (2013) and Erased James Franco (2008). His preoccupation with issues pertaining to identity and performance permeates the exhibition and is manifest across otherwise divergent media.

Born in Connecticut in 1970, Carter received his BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore, his MFA from the University of California, Davis, and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally and he has been the recipient of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant (2005) and the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Award (2005), among others. In 2009, Erased James Franco was screened at prestigious institutions worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern. His latest film Maladies, starring David Strathairn, James Franco and Catherine Keener premiered this year at the Berlinale International Film Festival and the SXSW film Festival in Austin.
