Communication Breakdown is a joint exhibition and collaborative effort between Edlin Gallery, New York and Creative Growth Art Center's new Paris outpost, Galerie Impaire. New York show dates are September 13 - October 25, 2008 with an opening reception Saturday, September 13th from 6 to 8 PM. Paris dates are September 24 – November 2, vernissage on September 24th from 6 to 8PM.
The show explores abstraction as a shifting notion - both formally and conceptually, with work by artists who employ the divergent methods of reductivism and bricolage. Their practice of either meticulous subtraction or obsessive layering results in disorienting collisions between manuscript and mechanical type, audile and visual perception, literacy and non-literacy.
The artists selected range from being highly engaged with the contemporary art community to totally detached from it. Their eclectic use of characters, materials and methodologies provoke elliptical readings of their compositions and elicit conversations about intention, self-awareness and context.
