> DESCRIPTION

envoy enterprises, in collaboration with NP, is pleased to present Travess Smalley's Compositions In Clay at our gallery located at 131 Chrystie Street.

Compositions In Clay consists of eight unique works from Travess Smalley's series of clay photographic paintings of the same name. These vivid prints are made by smearing richly colored and textured clay directly onto a glass scanner bed. Smalley then scans the resulting image into the computer to create a large, vivid photographic negative of each individual clay painting before printing them as unique editions. The Compositions in Clay, which defy the boundaries between the physical and the digital, vividly encourage viewers to immerse themselves in the gestural actions of painting and sculpting clay.

Smalley's practice revolves around the border of this digital-physical divide, while also being rooted in the traditions of modernism and abstract expressionism. His dynamic, colorful, visually-arresting works utilize contemporary digital tools like Photoshop to respond to modernist traditions. The works in Compositions In Clay simultaneously engage art historical ideas of beauty, composition and form while playing with viewers' perceptions of the materiality of the pieces. The results are ebullient, striking works that captivate and challenge.
