Teresa Margolles
OPERATIVO: PART 2
Opening Reception: Friday, August 8th, 6-9 p.m.
August 8th - September 6th, 2008
The gallery will be closed from August 17th to September 1st.
Y Gallery is pleased to present OPERATIVO: Part 2, the first solo
exhibition in New York by Teresa Margolles, curated by Cecilia Jurado. Teresa Margolles continues to
address death and loss in the second part of OPERATIVO. The first part
of the exhibition, held at Y Gallery, focused on current relations
between Mexico and the United States. Margolles reused and resignified
a Mexican drug-gang message and mass media news about Culiacán, Mexico,
Margolles' home town, where men and women are murdered
nearly everyday
in drug-related violence. This exhibition has had an enormous impact,
particularly on the immigrant population of New York City, where many come from conflictive realities.
For the second part, Margolles will put the writings aside and fill the space with a silent physiological presence.
Teresa Margolles earned degrees in Forensic Medicine and Science of
Communication at Universidad Nacional in Mexico. Her work has been
shown internationally at institutions such as P.S.1/MoMA in New York,
the Kunst-Werke Berlin, in South London, Kunsthalle Wien, The Museum of
Modern Art Frankfurt, Centre d'art Contemporain de Brétigny, MALBA
Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, El Museo del Barrio and
The Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York, among others. She has
participated in the Liverpool, Moscu, Prague, Mercosul and Cuenca
Biennials. She is currently showing in Manifesta 7. She lives in Mexico
City.
This project is possible thanks to the generous support of The Mexican Cultural Institute of New York.
