Deviating from the usual chaos of my work, Pretty-Cute embraces a temporary moment of calm. Basking in the lightness of love and warmth, the subjects, either in repose or standing, gaze dreamily into the windows and their surroundings. No longer fighting with their keepers, the creatures here become part of the background, allowing the figures to breathe and take in the moment. But calm becomes solitary. The stillness reminds one of loss and heartache. And the warmth reminds us that there is always more to come.
Born in Guang Dong, China and raised in New York, Gigi Chen received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in NYC in traditional animation. Gigi first exhibited her paintings in New York at Deitch Projects as part of the ARTSTAR reality based television program. She has also shown at the Queens Museum of Art and Mighty Tanaka Gallery in New York. Gigi currently works and resides in New York City.
