> DESCRIPTION

Fredericks & Freiser is pleased to present Onlooker, a solo exhibition of new paintings by Justin Craun. Culling images of women from style blogs, Craun details posed bodies and high-end clothing to structure larger abstract/ figure compositions. Jagged surfaces and hypnotic color shatter the decorum of the fashion that permeates these blogs in favor of a more unnerving experience.

Craun’s paintings parallel cyberspace’s amorphous landscape. Traditional figure/ground relationships fold into nonhierarchical painterly gestures. The carefully constructed identities of the women in the source photographs become unfixed and fluid. Balance is mysteriously achieved. Here these disparate elements converge to create an impossible reality.
