Charles Johnstone: A Few Empty Pools will be on view at Meredith Ward Fine Art from June 5 through July 13, 2012.
The exhibition will feature nine color photographs that form this series dating from 2011. This will be Johnstone’s third exhibition at Meredith Ward Fine Art.
Johnstone’s images, devoid of people, convey a sense of isolation amongst a usually bustling New York City. The empty pools emphasize the often-ignored abstract, structural qualities of a city scene. His photographs highlight the beauty of the rundown pools, juxtaposing their negative space against the populated structure of the surrounding city. The photos were captured during winter, when the pools are out of use, enabling Johnstone to focus on form by frustrating function. Johnstone traveled throughout New York City to capture these shots, often returning to a location several times to capture a particular light at a particular angle. They portray pools in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan.
Charles Johnstone is a self-trained photographer residing in New York. A limited-edition book of 150 signed and numbered copies is available for $70.00.
