Opening of ‘Ghost Yard’ Exhibition at Munch Gallery
A Solo Exhibition by Frodo Mikkelsen
April 21-June 10, 2012
Opening Reception Saturday, April 21, 7-9 pm

New York, NY, April 6, 2012 – Munch Gallery is pleased to present ‘Ghost Yard’, a solo exhibition by Danish artist Frodo Mikkelsen. The exhibition includes all new work consisting of paintings, sculpture and site-specific installation.

Frodo is one of the young rising artists in Scandinavia and is steadily gaining international recognition; his latest with the inclusion of one of his silver skull sculptures into the 3-D collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He has shown in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Russia, South Africa and the USA. His works are also represented in museum collections in Denmark and Norway.

The title of the exhibition, ‘Ghost Yard’ refers to one of the largest train yards in New York City. It is located on 10th Avenue between 207th and 215th streets. Most of the MTA’s vehicles are housed and repaired here. It is the final resting place of decommissioned trains before the are sent to the scrap yard. When Frodo was 10 years old, his father gave him a graffiti book in which he learned about the NYC Ghost Yard being a significant meetup spot for graffiti artists, it instantly became a source of magic and inspiration.

The works in the exhibition are tied together by a fascination for abandoned places; deserted construction sites, train and ship yards, vacant, run down manufacturing buildings, old houses – all remote and restricted. Secrets and stories of past lives and perhaps even new beginnings all live here. Upon trespassing into these places, an imaginary life projects itself and it is translated by the artist into land and cityscapes, where uneasiness lurks and horses return without riders. There is always a way into Ghost Yard, but do you really want in?

Frodo has created an exhibition, which declares the power between the obvious and the suggested. The viewer is met by stark, vibrant colors and defined rectangular shapes combined with soft, washed out gradients and delicate outlines. Brittle layers of cut paper, cover stock, silver and scrap wood. It’s an intricate ride and an exploration of the fragile debris of our lives.

This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the gallery.
An opening reception will be held Saturday April 21st and the artist will be present to discuss his works.
