Mike Weiss Gallery is pleased to present Navigator, by artist Eugene Lemay. For his first solo exhibition at the gallery, Lemay uses large-scale printers to create transient horizons on oversized sheets of paper measuring up to 20 ft in length. Interlaced with Hebrew and Arabic text, the effect is a minimalist take on projecting three-dimensional space onto a two-dimensional surface. Reflecting upon his time spent in the Israeli army navigating the terrain at night, these works, which are adhered directly onto the gallery walls and envelop the viewer’s entire field of vision, recreate the gravity and precision of moments lost in time. As a soldier, Lemay learned to understand that the smallest feature or fleeting light would allow him to mark his position on earth. By looking closely and deeply into the landscape, Lemay observed that details in the distance would appear and disappear as his eyes would adjust to the darkness. The result of this experience is a body of work that combines elements of landscape, installation, and text to create vast expanses of space.
