10 YEARS LATER – CHANGES IN NEW YORK SINCE 9/11
New Century Artists, Inc. will present 10 Years Later—Changes in New York Since 9/11 from February 14 to March 3, 2012. The exhibition is comprised of 30 color photographs by Chana Benjamin focusing on architecture, people, and nature. The opening receptions will be held on Thursday, February 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, February 25, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The photographs portray the changes that have taken place in New York City in the past decade. They were taken in three separate locations: the High Line, Union Square, and World Trade Center. Many glass buildings have been constructed along the High Line that offer astonishing aerial views of the city and can be seen as the perfect platform for combining architecture, people, and nature. Union Square has a constant flow of people. With the advent of the smartphone, young people can stay more connected—yet, at the same time, are they more alienated? Photographs of the Occupy Wall Street movement are included that were taken at Zucotti Park, across the street from World Trade Center, prior to the encampment being forced out by the city.
Finally, photographs of the buildings being erected at Ground Zero round out the exhibit’s theme, with images of the 9/11 Memorial and One World Trade Center on view. For many of us, this is the first time back to the site since the day before 9/11.
Chana Benjamin has been photographing for the past 40 years. She is the president, director, and founding member of New Century Artists, Inc., a Senior Fine Art Appraiser at O’Toole-Ewald Art Associates, Inc., an Assistant Professor at Parsons the New School for Design, and an instructor at Pratt Institute.
NEW CENTURY ARTISTS, INC. BACKGROUND
New Century Artists, Inc. is a non-profit art gallery that encourages, supports, and exhibits the work of minority artists from under-represented communities, such as gay and lesbian, various ethnic groups, people of color, differently abled, women, and artists of all ages, including seniors and children.
Since its inception in September 1996, New Century Artists has shown the work of approximately 1,000 national and international artists in over 300 solo and group exhibitions in all media. New Century Artists is committed to exhibiting quality work as well as providing a nurturing environment for lesser known artists to network and develop their ideas.
New Century Artists, located in the heart of Chelsea, is comprised of two gallery spaces totaling 1,200 square feet. Besides membership shows, guest curators are invited to organize exhibits. We have actively worked in the past with other non-profit groups, such as Heartshare and The Creative Center for Women with Cancer, and children’s groups, including Artsconnection, Harlem School of the Arts, Studio in a School, and Middle School 51 in Brooklyn. Since 2001, Reflections on the Holocaust: Works by Holocaust Survivors, Family Members and Friends, curated by gallery director Chana Benjamin, has traveled to four different locations.
