Painting Miniature Portraits

Students will learn about the Indo-Persian miniature painting approach in an intensive, five day workshop focusing on traditional portraiture. Creating handmade paper, preparing the painting surface, mixing colors using gum arabic, applying gold leaf, and painting with tea washes are some of the techniques that will be introduced. Students will also learn how to stylize facial features according to the traditions of miniature portraiture.
Workshop participants will be required to bring in a passport sized photograph (side profile), to use as a reference for their authentic miniature portrait.
Hiba Schahbaz trained in the art of miniature painting at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan. She has practiced contemporary miniature painting for the past ten years and is currently pursuing her MFA in Painting at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. She has exhibited her work in traditional and contemporary miniature painting internationally, in addition to curating exhibitions of miniature paintings in Pakistan and India.
