This workshop introduces students to the techniques and the philosophy of East Asian brush calligraphy. No prior experience with calligraphy is required.  Each session begins with a brief talk, illustrated with examples of the great calligraphy of the past.  The objectives of this section are twofold: first, to gain a technical understanding of the art of brush calligraphy; and second, to gain an aesthetic appreciation of the world of East Asian brush calligraphy. Students learn to hold the brush effectively and to practice the basic strokes in different styles.  The majority of each session is devoted to actually doing calligraphy. In addition to the direct knowledge of practical brush calligraphy, students are encouraged to think about the meaning and effect calligraphy has in contemporary drawing and painting—the expansion of stroke and gesture, which has significance in all art forms.

Yoo Sung Lee is a professional calligrapher with over thirty years of practice. A native of Seoul, Korea, Dr. Lee has taught, lectured, and demonstrated the art of calligraphy widely. He has exhibited his work in numerous galleries and museums in the U.S., France, China, Thailand, and Korea.  He is a member of the Korean American Calligraphy Association, and has served as President of Art of Ink in America Society (AIAS) since 2010.  He is the invitational author for a chapter on “Korean Calligraphy” in the World Encyclopedia of Calligraphy (2011).
