"The very idea of a bird is a symbol and a suggestion to the poet. A bird seems to be at the top of the scale, so vehement and intense his life...The beautiful vagabonds, endowed with every grace, masters of all climes, and knowing no bounds -- how many human aspirations are realised in their free, holiday-lives -- and how many suggestions to the poet in their flight and song!" - John Burroughs
Yancey Richardson Gallery is pleased to present Beautiful Vagabonds, a summer group show exploring a fascination with birds in contemporary photography. As naturalist John Burroughs observed in the 19th century, the symbol of the bird is a touchstone of human aspirations, evoking a freedom and grace unparalleled in the natural world. As with any object of fascination, a desire to capture the essence and mystery of birds persists in contemporary art making. Beautiful Vagabonds explores these desires through the lens of several leading photographers, including Alex Prager, Esko Mannikko, David Hilliard, Terry Evans, Kahn & Selesnick, Bertien van Manen, Masao Yamamoto, Barbara Bosworth, Paula McCartney, Needa Madahar, Simen Johan, and Sanna Kannisto, among others.
