Viridian Artists' 22nd International Juried Exhibition
Juried by Elisabeth Sussman, Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
June 28 - July 16, 2011
Thursday, June 30, 5:00 - 8:00 pm.
Chelsea: Viridian Artists Inc. is pleased to present their 22nd International Juried Exhibition. Curated by Elisabeth Sussman, Senior Curator of Photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the exhibition opens June 28, and continues through July 16, 2011. In celebration, a special reception will be held on Thursday, June 30th, 5:00-8:00pm.
This exhibition is a diverse gathering of artists from the United States and abroad, reflective of the culturally diverse nature of today's art world and the world in general. Though most are from the US, it's clear from both their names and their art that their sources of inspiration and method of expression and that their background and origins come from both near and far.
The diversity of the artists and their work is exemplified by the prize winning artists. First prize winner, Naz Shalrokh, is a graduate of Pratt and currently teaches at Fayed University in Abu Duabi. Her delicate and sensitive artwork reflects both her past & present life. Peter Hiers, 2nd prize winner, from Pacific Grove California, works with the detritus of found tire fragments, and 3rd prize winner, Pauline Thomas, lives in Paris and her winning works are intense photographic close-ups.
In her curatorial statement, Sussman talks about "whether the works submitted typifies or mirrors the art world in general, or whether… the pool of submissions parallel examples of tendencies seen widely in this particular year." Regardless, for her, "the act of choosing finalists probably draws on both perspectives" and her objective was to select works that are "inventive, original & inspiring."
There is so much interesting and exciting art being done today that both Ms. Sussman and Viridian Artists' director, Vernita Nemec, selected additional artists to be included in Curator's Choice & Director's Choice PowerPoint presentations to be shown continually throughout the exhibition. The inclusion of these artists is also a reflection of Viridian's desire to give exposure to the abundance of outstanding art being created today.
