> DESCRIPTION

Each artist in the gallery’s current exhibition conjures contemporary culture while exploring spirituality, phenomenology, and celebrity. All three employ very different approaches to drawing, which is central to their artistic practice. They appropriate images, from spiritual leaders and historic figures to contemporary celebrities and ordinary people, re-imagining the figure in restrained terms using signature techniques to reveal their personal poetry.

American Mike Paré continues to explore notions of mysticism, tribalism, and radical social structures in his work. His new drawings are actually transfers which he creates by placing graphite, charcoal, and/or color-embedded paper on top of another sheet of paper, akin to a rubbing. Paré then “scratches” the paper to reveal a “presence” and in effect channels the subjects depicted in the drawings.

German artist Roland Schappert works across multiple media, all of which figure equally in his career. Schappert uses his accomplished classical drawing skills in combination with his personal poetry, which often read like one-word or one-line encapsulations of his emotional state. Using oil paint on paper, the paint is often fugitive, creating stains and shadows that bring depth to the work.

“Reality is usually pretty boring. I like to be carried along by pictures. Imagination makes reality poetic.” - Sara van der Heide

Dutch artist Sara Van der Heide never clarifies where imagination begins and reality finishes. Using a broad range of media on paper, she builds semi-transparent layers of unusual depth revealing her personal mystic truths, switching back and forth between definition and suggestion.
