In this workshop, designed for students who have at least intermediate level experience working from the figure and portrait, we observe with a clear and careful eye our model’s unique structure, color, value relationships and posture. Our goal is to distill this complex information, through sustained study, into a simply expressed, harmonious construction. Working in the radiance of natural light, we engage in the intense color analysis intrinsic to working in pastel. There will be one pose for the duration of the workshop. A slide presentation and discussion of the instructor’s in-progress portraits illustrate her evolving response to her subjects, and the gradual interweaving of pastel strokes—from first steps to completed portrait.
There is much opportunity to discuss the layers of encounter that shape the making of a portrait. The class is divided into an instructed morning session and an uninstructed afternoon session, where students are able to continue working from the model in the same pose.
Ellen Eagle is represented by Forum Gallery. Her work is exhibited widely and has been reproduced in, among other publications, The New York Times and The Newark Star Ledger, which described her pastels as having an “exquisite transparency not seen for centuries.” Her work is featured in the April 2011 issue of The Artist’s Magazine.
