The Directors of Marlborough Gallery are pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Jean Pagliuso entitled The Poultry and Raptor Suites. The exhibition will open at Marlborough Gallery on February 23 and will continue through March 26, 2011.
In recent years, Jean Pagliuso has created a series of formal portraits of magnificent birds standing unadorned against a minimal background. Inspiration for this body of work originally came from memories of her late father, who raised show chickens as a hobby in Southern California. Though seemingly uncharacteristic of her previous endeavors, which included fashion photography, celebrity portraits and landscapes, Pagliuso’s Poultry and Raptor Suites integrate a unique subject matter with thirty years of experience in formal portraiture and the artist’s considerable technical expertise.
In creating this series, Pagliuso uses time-honored photographic techniques. She photographs the birds in the natural light of her Chelsea studio using a medium format camera. In the darkroom a silver emulsion is hand applied onto thin sheets of handmade Kaji rice paper and a larger format Thai Mulberry paper. In a traditional darkroom procedure, the negative is then exposed onto the paper to create an image that is at once painterly and documentary.
Jean Pagliuso currently lives in Santa Fe and New York.
