WEIGH IT/ PAY IT
curated by Henry Roth
Artist: Michael Mut
New York, New York -march 10- April 23, 2011
ATTENTION DEFICEIT DISORDER! WEIGH IT/ PAY FOR IT/ WRAP IT/WALK IT
On March 10th Michael Mut Gallery will be opening a bazaar of paintings, artifacts and signature works all priced per pound – first weigh it, then pay for it; wrap it, then walk it.
Ours is an impatient world of disposability. The daily whirl of images and impressions that eagerly dance before our eyes only to be dumped on the pile yester-second, drain our creative minds. Our words travel globally in milliseconds; billions of dollars flow in and out of existence relentlessly; trends are transcended infinitely.
Art galleries are the democratic flip side to the media-gorged world; the go-to for a point of difference, yet people don’t know how to get a chunk of it. The tradition of art seems too old for some yet immature for others.
How thus can art transition from static to fluid, to enter the flow of timelessness when time moves faster than ever? How can art remain relevant while retaining its integrity and feeding our creative desire?
Michael Mut steps in to this turmoil to challenge the tradition of the art market. On March 10th he will be hauling out the industrial scales, hoisting them up and blowing open the doors to his paintings, artifacts and signature oil textured works. His art market will price works by pound – first weigh it then pay for it.
Mut’s will be an open, fluid market and prices will fluctuate according to democratic demand. The final price for each work will be pounds x price point, and prices will change with dramatic volatility and fluidity.
Employing a twisted mime of tradition and commodity, Mut is offering a refreshing alternative to the evaluation of art.
