Section I
Introduction to Underpainting and Painting the Flesh

March 14-18, Monday-Friday, 8:45 am – 12:30 pm (instructor present each day).
Enrollment is limited to 15 students.

Throughout the history of painting, artists have utilized many approaches and techniques to painting the human form. The use of varied approaches to underpainting, particularly during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, was an integral part of the rich painting associated with those periods. This intensive weeklong workshop will focus on underpainting and grisaille techniques. Working from students’ drawings and old master copies, students will utilize various oil painting processes to create skin tones. Throughout the week there will be lectures, demonstrations and individual critiques. The techniques involved will show how to use step-by-step procedures of underpaintings together with glazes, scumbles to paint rich flesh. All levels, from beginners to more advanced, are welcome.

Section II Painting the Live Model Using Underpainting Techniques

March 21-25, Monday-Friday, 8:45 am – 12:30 pm (instructor present each day)
Enrollment is limited to 12 students.

This second intensive weeklong workshop is preferably taken together with the first week's workshop, but can be taken alone. Part II will focus on underpainting and grisaille techniques while working from the live model. Students will work up an underpainting from the model in preparation for the skin tones using step-by-step procedures of underpainting followed by glazes, scumbles as well as alla prima techniques. Throughout the week there will be lectures, demonstrations and individual critiques. The techniques involved will show how to paint rich flesh. All levels, from beginners to more advanced, are welcome.
